How GUPA became what it is today…

In the fall of 2003 a number of ultimate players in Guelph decided that they had the energy and enthusiasm to start a non-profit ultimate league in Guelph. They wanted to play in town and to share the game with other people as well. They wanted a league that would be open and transparent to everyone and where all players could be involved in decision making if they wanted to be. The beginning of the league was met with a lot of interest and support. Many people came to the first meeting at the Albion in February.

From the very beginning there was never a problem getting enough people interested in helping out with whatever was necessary. Whether it was helping to set up a field, turn off the lights or anything else that was needed. This was all part of the collective and community spirit that was a part of the feeling and energy of the league.

Our first season went off better than expected, we had ten teams in the summer league divided into two divisions. In the fall we had 8 teams also divided into two divisions and we played under the lights. With over 150 players involved in our inaugural season we were excited to watch the league continue to grow and expand in the years to come.
